DESTINATIONS - Wapanocca National Wildlife Refuge

Last Updated March 24, 2009

Wapanocca is a great place to paddle, has abundant wildlife and is only a short drive from Memphis. In my trips there in the fall of 2008, I saw more Egrets than I have seen anywhere else.

When we first visited Wapanocca in 2005, the lake was completely dry due to a lack of a consistent water source for the lake. With additional funding, the lake was refilled with well water in about 2006 and re-opened to the public in 2008. The picture from Google Earth must be rather old because the lake is not as open now as it was in the picture. My theory is that the dry lake allowed grass to grow and much of this has remained. However, there is still plenty of areas to paddle, and the plant life makes for a beautiful setting.

It should be noted that the lake is closed to access in the fall and opens back up in the spring. It is best to call the office during normal business hours (M-F) to find out the closing and opening dates. Since they have problems with a consistent water source, it would probably be a good idea to call and ask about the water level as well.

Location

Wapanocca National Wildlife Refuge is located along Hwy. 77 between Jericho and Turrell, Arkansas. The main entrance and headquarters are just off of Hwy. 77, North of the intersection with Hwy. 42. The boat ramp is located on the East side of Hwy. 77 on the other side of the gated railroad crossing.

From I-55 heading south, turn off at exit #23 (Turrell exit), travel southeast on Highway 77 two miles, turn east on Highway 42, go under the railroad overpass and turn right at the top of the hill (refuge entrance). From I-55 heading north, turn off at exit 21 (Highway 42), travel east 1 ½ miles on Highway 42, cross Highway 77, go under the railroad overpass and turn right at the top of the hill (refuge entrance).
